Zanzibar to construct new sea port

Posted on : Thursday , 10th September 2015

ZANZIBAR government has officially approved the construction of a new sea port at Mpiga-duri coastal area starting early next year. This was announced here by President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein saying that Exim Bank of China has already allocated 200 million US dollars as part of the funds for the project.

He said Zanzibar has been on the right track in achieving its development goals and the new port will put an end to the present congestion at the Malindi main port on Unguja Island. Exim Bank has accepted to provide loan to Zanzibar for the multimillion US dollar project, expected to boost trade in the region.

"Let us be proud of our admirable development. There are a lot planned by the government which should be supported by the people without being afraid of change," said Dr Shein.

The proposal for the sea port project started some years ago, but under the current government led by Dr Shein the idea has been expedited for implementation.

The project may help to move Zanzibar from its current state of a poor country to a middle income state in the next few years. The port will be designed to handle large vessels, and upon completion will generate millions of US dollars and will play a vital role in the economy.
